  1. Melbourne wasn’t always called Melbourne; this city used to be known an Batmania (named after John Batman, who was a colonist that arrived in Melbourne in 1835).
  2. During the Gold Rush period in the 1850’s, Melbourne was actually one of the world’s largest and richest cities!
  3. Melbourne’s hottest temperature on record was on Black Saturday (a tragic event that took many lives); which was 46.4 degrees Celsius (115.5 F)!
  4. Melbourne was the capital city of Australia for 26 years, from 1901-1927.
  5. In 1855, workers in Melbourne won the rights to the first world’s 8-hour working day; which made Australia known as the “workingman’s paradise”.
  6. Melbourne has the largest number of Holocaust survivors of any Australian city, and the highest per capita outside Israel.
  7. Melbourne has the largest Greek-speaking population outside of Europe.
  8. Aussie rules football was created in Melbourne in 1858 by Tom Willis. It’s a mix of rugby and Gaelic football; and the purpose of creating this was to keep cricketers fit during off-season.
  9. Melbourne’s tramways are the largest system out of Europe and the 4th largest in the world!
  10. Melbourne is the world’s most livable city, 7 years in a row (including 2017)!
